The Finley Gallery is a small gallery in the stairwell of an apartment complex. The stairwell leads to the parking garage and back up to the inside of the complex. People who aren’t residents can view the gallery from the outside through a long run of windows . Being in Los Angeles this stairwell will be the resident’s primary breezeway between their internal living environment and their external life of the city. These types of spaces often become invisible to the user. They are the here to there, while our focus is on the destination rather the process of the space and a continuum of unfolding moments. If we’ve experienced it enough as routine, our minds don’t seem to take notice unless there’s anomaly to the ordinary. So, enter 1 to 5 to 1 / Finley Gallery.
