PRELUDE TO CYCLE, EXCERPT 02:00, ORIGINAL VIDEO 12:00, HD, COLOR, SOUND.
musical score: JOHN BRUMLEY
Prelude to Cycle is a meditation on impermanence.  Over and over again we hear a sound byte from Mythologist Joseph Campbell defining the common structure of all myth. The interesting thing about Campbell’s look on this unifying quality of mythology is that the statement holds true for every moment.  All experience, all moments of sensory awareness, embody an intrinsic arising and passing away.  Yet our human perception dominantly identifies with only the arising - stitching each arising together to give us the illusion that time is continuous.  Lost we become in the repetition of Prelude to Cycle, and with it some sort of cleansing emerges by loosing oneself - this comfortable space of not knowing.
Installation view, New Wight Gallery, University of California at Los Angeles.  HD video, fan, arduino, custom software with interval pulse setting, parachute, mats, sound.
